3+1 sterile neutrinos at the CNGS
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the potential of the CNGS beam in constraining the parameter space of a model with three active plus one sterile neutrino such as to explain the LSND results. We perform our analysis using the OPERA detector as a reference (our analysis can be upgraded including a detailed simulation of the ICARUS detector). We point out that the best channel to look for sterile neutrinos at the CNGS beam is νμ → ντ , that is precisely the main signal for which both OPERA and ICARUS have been designed. We also analyse νμ → νe oscillations. We take advantage of the expected efficiencies and backgrounds for these signals and evaluate the OPERA potential to look for sterile neutrinos. Combination of data from both channels permit to cover almost all of the allowed CP-conserving 3+1 neutrino model parameter space. 6 sol atm LSND 6 sol atm LSND 6sol atm LSND 6sol atm LSND | {z } (3+1) 6sol atm LSND 6 sol atm LSND | {z } (2+2) Fig. 1. Sterile neutrinos at the CNGS
We study the potential of the CNGS beam in constraining the parameter space of a model with one sterile neutrino separated from three active ones by an O(eV) masssquared difference, ∆m sbl . We perform our analysis using the OPERA detector as a reference (our analysis can be upgraded including a detailed simulation of the ICARUS detector). We point out that the channel with the largest potentia...
متن کاملICANOE and OPERA experiments at the LNGS/CNGS
We discuss two experiments ICANOE and OPERA that have been proposed within the context of long-baseline and atmospheric neutrino experiments in Europe. The joint ICANOE/OPERA program aims at further improving our understanding of the effect seen in atmospheric neutrinos. This program is based on (1) a continuation of the observation of atmospheric neutrinos with the improved technique of ICANOE...
متن کاملNeutrinos from CERN to Gran Sasso: The CNGS project
The CNGS project (CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso) has been approved to make an unambiguous and direct observation of νμ − ντ oscillations. An intense and relatively pure νμ beam is generated at CERN and directed towards LNGS (Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso) in Italy. Two experiments, OPERA already started in 2007 and ICARUS T600, will try to detect tau neutrinos using large and complex detec...

The OPERA neutrino detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, through the study of νμ → ντ oscillations. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors. It is placed in the high-energy, long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neut...
متن کاملMONOLITH: a next generation experiment for atmospheric neutrinos
Although the evidence for neutrino oscillation is growing year after year, the final proof that the observed anomalies are due to oscillation is still outstanding. Alternative models (neutrino decay, potential decoherence effect, influence of large extra-dimensions) to explain the SuperKamiokande (SK) atmospheric neutrinos results have been proposed. On the experimental side, as pointed out als...
